Ahsan Jamal (b. 1975) received a BFA in Miniature Painting from the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan, in 2003. Jamal’s contemplative studio practice examines the genre of portrait painting within the discipline of Indo-Persian miniature painting. By constantly experimenting with materials and techniques, Jamal has developed a distinctive style of painting where humans appear in dream-like spaces. Jamal’s practice reflects on the traces of civil wars, partitions, and geographical divides, and surveys the similarities and differences among ordinary people shaped by social and religious conflicts and the idea of nationhood. Jamal has shown in eight solo exhibitions and numerous curated group exhibitions in prominent museums and galleries in Pakistan and abroad, such as the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; Lawrie Shabibi, Dubai, UAE; British Council, London, UK; Cartwright Hall, Bradford, UK; Ilkley Manor House, UK; HNTB Gallery, Washington, USA; Queen’s Palace, Bagh-e-Babur, Kabul, Afghanistan; Twelve Gates Gallery, Philadelphia, USA; Aicon Gallery, New York, USA; Galleria Gomiero, Milan, Italy; Art Alive, New Delhi, India; Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, Buenos Aires, Argentina; SPAN Galleries, Melbourne, Australia; National Museum of Art, Islamabad; and Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi. Jamal has also shown in the Brussels Oriental Art Fair 2009, Art Paris 2009, and Asia Now, Paris Art Fair 25. His work can be found in numerous private collections and notable permanent museum collections around the world. Jamal has taught and conducted workshops on miniature painting in various art institutions across Pakistan. He lives and works in Lahore.
