AMMAMA MALIK

Subjects are captured in a dreamlike state, detached from their surroundings, these figures comfort themselves, at times curled up in the fetus position and sometimes lightly draped in the warmth of covers using them as a protective medium.

Remaining in a raw surreal state the subjects emerge from hiding and gradually connect with their environment, somewhat aware of it but still not involved; a slow transition from disassociation to being begins.

The artworks draw inspiration from the baroque and renaissance era and traditional techniques have been used to produce the paintings whilst keeping the contemporary world in mind.

In my work drapery has always played a prominent role as an object of concealment however in this series it goes further and offers protection, a safe haven to the subjects to reveal their true selves.
